Need help with 0 LUX? Email abstraktmarketingsolutions@gmail.com and, if it's a bug report, include your iPhone model, iOS version, and what you were shooting (VIDEO or PHOTO mode, REC FORMAT, filter). A screen recording of the problem helps a lot.

What 0 LUX is

0 LUX (say "zero lux") turns your iPhone into a 1990s night-vision camcorder. The green infrared "night mode" look — phosphor glow, real scanned tape grain, bloom and CCD smear, a rolling tape band, dropout sparks, interlace scanlines, and the head-switching static along the bottom edge — is rendered live on the GPU while you shoot. What you see in the viewfinder is exactly what gets saved: videos and photos land in your camera roll with the effect already in the file, no render step, no waiting.

The optional camcorder OSD (STBY/REC, timecode counter, date, clock, battery, LUX meter, corner brackets, and the 0 LUX or NIGHT MODE badge) is burned in the same way. If it's on screen, it's in the file.

Quick start

  1. Record. Point the phone and tap the round REC button. The OSD flips from STBY to REC and the counter starts. The control bar hides while you're rolling (a single tap brings it back); tap REC again to stop and the clip saves straight to Photos. Tap the viewfinder to focus. Double-tap to flip between the back and front cameras — it works mid-recording, with a quick input-switch blink like changing inputs on a deck.
  2. Zoom rocker. Hold T or W for a motorized zoom that eases through lens detents like a real camcorder. You can also pinch the viewfinder: 0.5x–12x on the back camera, 1x–6x on the front.
  3. Static slider. Slide and hold anywhere on the viewfinder to raise or lower the static level live, while you shoot. With MOTION FX on, the static also responds to how you move the phone.
  4. Menu. Tap the sliders icon at the right end of the control bar. Rows: REC FORMAT (480P / 720P / 1080P), ASPECT (9:16 / 4:3 / 1:1), FRAME RATE (24 / 30 / 60), GAIN (OFF / +9DB / 0 LUX), FILTER (CLASSIC / DRILL / IR MONO), INK POP (1–4), STATIC (LOW / MED / HIGH), MOTION FX, TAPE AUDIO, DISPLAY (FULL / DATE / OFF), BADGE, and DISPLAY ITEMS. Options marked ◆ PRO are part of 0 LUX PRO. RETURN closes the menu.
  5. Light. The flashlight icon toggles the back-camera torch; on the front camera the same button turns on a screen flash.
  6. Photos. Tap the VIDEO/PHOTO chip above the shutter to switch to PHOTO mode, then use the on-screen shutter or press either volume button. The thumbnail button at the left of the control bar opens the Photos app so you can review what you just shot.

Rotate the phone and the viewfinder snaps between portrait and landscape. In landscape, the aspect ratio flips wide automatically.

Frequently asked

How do I unlock 0 LUX PRO?

Tap any option marked ◆ PRO in the menu (for example REC FORMAT 1080P or FILTER DRILL), tap the thumbnail window in the bottom-left corner (Import), or open the 0 LUX PRO row at the bottom of the menu. The Pro screen shows the price in your local currency, straight from the App Store. Confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your Apple Account password and everything unlocks immediately. It's a single one-time purchase, not a subscription, so there is nothing to renew or cancel.

I already paid. How do I get Pro back on a new iPhone?

Open the Pro screen (tap any ◆ PRO option, or the 0 LUX PRO row at the bottom of the menu) and tap RESTORE. As long as you're signed in to the same Apple Account you bought it with, Pro comes back at no charge. If a restore doesn't take, check that the phone is online and signed in to the right Apple Account in iOS Settings, then try again. Still stuck? Email us with the date of the original purchase.

Where do my videos and photos go?

Straight into the Photos app on your iPhone, in your camera roll, with the effect and any OSD already in the file. The app keeps no library of its own, so anything you shoot is a normal video or photo you can share, edit, or back up like any other.

Because the look is written into the file at capture, it can't be removed afterwards. If you also want a clean version of a moment, shoot it with the regular Camera app.

Why is 480P the free resolution?

Because that's what VHS actually was. Standard-definition tape topped out around 480 lines, so 480P is the authentic resolution for this look and it's free in full, with every effect layer and every shooting control. 720P and 1080P are there for people who want the aesthetic on a sharper frame, and they're part of 0 LUX PRO.

What is Import?

It applies the 0 LUX look to a video or photo you already have. Tap the small thumbnail window in the bottom-left corner of the camera screen, pick anything from your camera roll, choose the deck and whether the date stamp goes in, and tap SAVE TO CAMERA ROLL. The app renders the look (with your current gain, static and INK POP settings) into a new item in Photos; the original is untouched. Import is a 0 LUX PRO feature.

My recording got interrupted. Is it gone?

No. If a recording is cut off by a phone call, a low battery, or the app being closed, the footage captured up to that point is rescued and saved to your camera roll the next time you open 0 LUX. Just launch the app and check Photos.

How do I turn off the timecode, date, or other OSD items?

Open the menu. DISPLAY switches the whole overlay between FULL, DATE (date and clock only) and OFF, and BADGE picks 0 LUX or NIGHT MODE; both are free. With 0 LUX PRO, the DISPLAY ITEMS row lets you switch each readout on or off individually: REC, BRACKETS, BADGE, MOON, LUX, BATTERY, COUNTER, DATE and CLOCK. The viewfinder is what-you-see-is-what-you-get, so if it's gone from the screen it's gone from the file.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account, no sign-in, ever. The app works fully offline. The only time it needs a connection is to load the Pro price, complete a purchase, or restore one.

Which devices are supported?

iPhone running iOS 16 or later. There is no iPad or Mac version.

The bottom edge of the frame keeps flickering. Is that a bug?

That's the head-switching noise, the band of static a real tape deck leaves at the bottom of every frame. It's intentional and part of the look. If you'd like less of it overall, lower STATIC in the menu or slide-and-hold on the viewfinder to dial the static level down while you shoot.

Why does my audio sound hissy?

TAPE AUDIO is on. It adds tape hiss and narrows the bandwidth of the mic track to match the picture. Turn it off in the menu for clean microphone audio. TAPE AUDIO is a 0 LUX PRO feature; free recordings always use clean microphone audio.

Is my data private?

Yes. Everything you shoot stays on your iPhone: no accounts, no analytics, no tracking, and nothing you record is ever uploaded. The only thing that leaves the phone is your App Store purchase receipt, checked through Apple and our purchase-verification service so RESTORE works on a new iPhone. Read the full Privacy Policy.
